This is a response to the article MS Private servers, after indepth research.

Ok, so I’ve been poking around after catching interest in Savage’s article about private servers. Well, we all know that Nexon America did not make MapleStory, nor did they translate it(Wizet was the original translator and developer of the game), so Nexon can not really do anything about it, because they didn’t make the game so they couldn’t sue for copyright issues even if they wanted to.
They might though sue for stealing issues (taking gMS items etc.,) but for all the private MS servers I know, they mainly use base files from KMS, which I’m not sure but is managed by a division of Wizet. Wizet makes thousands of dollars every day, so I’m pretty sure they’ll act like Blizzard when WoW private servers came out, unless the private server makes a substancial amount of money, they will most likely blow the server away. And if you know how private servers are with all their unbearable lag, most likely players won’t play on it for long since it’s not much fun compared to the offical version.
This is just my point of view so I want constructive criticism only please. Thanks.

I hope you know that most (if not all) private servers don’t actually change the game files, but is actually just a DB (most commonly made in MySQL), and the server (Made in C++, and run after committing changes to item stats and what-have-you). The server runs in conjunction with MS itself, and all it requires to run locally is a hex-edited MapleStory executable, with its connection IPs changed to 127.0.0.1. After that, one can add an account to the DB, and can log in and play after running the MS Executable
It’s slightly more complicated than what I posted, but search for TitanMS, which is the base server most people use. That’ll give you some insight. No intellectual property is being stolen or changed.

Private servers have made me quit GMS, I will never in my right mind go back to it. When I did play GMS I felt like I was wasting my life trying to gain levels because it took so long (I got to 75 btw, which I think took about 6 months or more, I can’t honestly remember exactly). With private servers I can get to a really high level within hours and quit playing for days without feeling the need to keep playing for many many hours at a time. On GMS I was spending way too much time playing (possibly 6 hours or more in a day). I would honestly have to say I was addicted to GMS, and without me discovering private servers I would probably still be addicted, so for me discovering private servers was a good thing and it has helped me break the cycle of playing maple everyday.
You might as well stop, because your getting nowhere for stating your opinion. Nexon has every single right to sue and have the servers shut down…Haven’t you ever heard of copyright infringement? So before you write a post that has totally no meaning to it, I’d think you better do your reasearch. BTW report this poster just recieved a notice from a multinatinal law firm called Allen & Overy telling report this poster they have 14 days to “Cease and Disist” which means “stop” all illegal conduct in regard’s to Nexon’s intellectual property. In other words, if report this poster doesn’t stop and shut down, Nexon will probably sue and then have the server shut down as well.

Ok this is funny,
just so u guys know, nexon can only sue if the owners of the private servers make money off them, change wz files, or release source data.
Just so everyone knows, OdinMS is not written in C++. It was written in Java so as to make it cross platform compatible. The only reason why OdinMS was hit so hard was because they were the ones that worked their asses off to bring this to the people. So that people could use a private server to have fun. World of Warcraft also has a lot of private servers, but I don’t see Blizzard going crazy and suing everyone over that. The main problem that Nexon has is that it thinks that, in making the client point to a different IP, that it is, in a sense, hacking. What I think they believe is that hackers will eventually find some way to point the MapleStory client at a different IP than their servers, and that IP they point to will change how GMS is accessed by the client. They may also be worried for the players, because if hackers do point their clients to a different server that goes through, edits something, and lets the player play on a GMS server, that the people running the “proxy” if you will, will be able to steal information. That is my view.

Mmk here’s how it is- Nexon can NOT in any way take legal action against you for running private servers, as long as you are NOT making money off of it and NOT creating your own version of the CLIENT (The world you play in, characters, areas, so forth, you can edit.) If you just host/play on a private server, it is not illegal.
And both sides are in a way right. GMS does take too long, and all that. But private servers will never really count, right? Either way it’s just a game.
Just to clarify, Nexon (or W) can NOT take ANY legal action against you for hosting/playing a private server.
And even if they could they don’t give a fuck. As long as you don’t become bigger than they are, of course.
